During the summer of 2007, the Reference Department received a
significant upgrade. A total of 19 computer work stations have been
installed (one of which is handicap accessible). The stations include
flat screen monitors and terminals which converse with a main server
in order to provide access to the Internet (NCLive, other online
databases, various search engines, and the online catalog). The
fact that the stations are not comprised of traditional, individual
computers should increase the speed of each unit, in turn decreasing
the patron’s wait time. This project also included two stations
for the Main Stacks (floors 2 and 3) to facilitate online catalog
searches. Additionally, tools the Librarians and Faculty employ
when teaching Bibliographic Instruction sessions in the Reference
Department were enhanced. The upgrade included the following items:
self-enclosed, lockable rolling cart, laptop, and document projection
unit, which allows the Librarian or Professor to project the pages
of the book directly onto the screen without making a transparency;
it can be also used for 3-D items.
