A Message from the FOL Board Chair
Dear Friends of the Library,
What a privilege to chair the 2007-2008 Friends of
the Library Board. When the Academic Resource Center (ARC) was moved
to the Ethel K. Smith Library in 2002, I had no clue that I would
have the opportunity to serve in such a capacity.
Books and reading have always been such an integral part of my life.
My journey in books began with weekly visits to the Watauga County
Library as a child as I read as much historical fiction as I could
get my hands on. During my Wingate College career, Kathleen Jackson
taught me a respect for British literature and Ethel K. taught me
respect for a library. Today, because my position as Director of
Academic Advising is housed in the ARC, I get to come to the Library
every day for work. How wonderful is that?!!
The FOL Board promises to provide you with several wonderful opportunities
this year beginning with our Homecoming guest on November 3, 2007.
As usual, we also have an exciting author already scheduled for
the Annual Author’s Luncheon in the Spring of 2008. (You can
read about our event calendar both in this and in future issues
of The Bookmark).
I learned last year that one of the very important responsibilities
of the FOL Board is to make a gift to the Library that will improve
the educational experience of our students. Last year we were able
to provide additional support for students’ bibliographic
instruction training. Who knows what our opportunities will be this
year? However, as Wingate University grows and technology is used
to enhance the learning process, you can be assured that the FOL
Board will make the decision about this year’s gift wisely.
Beth Murray
Chairperson, Friends of the Library
Dr. Beth Murray (Wingate ’70) is the Director
of Academic Advising and an Assistant Professor of Education. She
has been at Wingate for 27 years. In her free time, Beth enjoys
spending time with her family, traveling, and, of course, reading!
Little known facts about Beth include that she is a NASCAR fan and
participates in a fantasy football league (General Manager of the
W’underdogs) —yes, she is very competitive.
