An Inter-Disciplinary Study of Louis Sachar’s Holes

Ms. Karen Williams directs her students in a HOLES activity designed by Ms. Debbie Hargett.While visiting with Ms. Karen Williams’ AIG Fifth Grade Class, a true cross-curriculum study took place. Specific vocabulary terms included: palindrome, discipline, inter-disciplinary, and homonym.

Ms. Odom elaborates on the concept of the willing suspension of disbelief in literature and discusses poisonous lizards with the class.During the lesson, three competency goals were addressed and the specific subject areas were: literature (which included the application of library skills), math, and science. This presentation included multi-media components, concrete objects, such as a shovel and cubic foot of dirt, multiple handouts, and possible exercises for future discussion.
