Annually, the Friends of the Library Board selects a gift for the Ethel K. Smith Library on behalf of the Friends of the Library (FOL). In light of the Vick Family Library donation, the Board elected to commission the design and construction of the display case, which houses the Vick Vinegar Bible and other impressive texts from the Vick collection, as the gift for the 2004-2005 academic year.

The FOL Board chose Bill Ballard of Retail Concepts, Inc., Monroe, North Carolina as the case designer. Mr. Ballard consulted with the head archivist at the Library of Congress as he selected the wood for the case (mahogany) and glass type for the best possible preservation of the items.

In addition to the case, the FOL Board wanted to recognize and honor the Vick Family for their donation and remember the impact that G.W. Vick and Frances Cuthbertson Vick had on the Wingate University community. A recognition ceremony was conducted on Sunday, the first of May, two thousand and five. Following the ceremony, guests were invited to a special afternoon tea. Two hundred guests joined the FOL Board for the dedicatory event.

The Vick Vinegar Bible is on display in the main lobby of the Ethel K. Smith Library. Please remember, for preservation purposes, that flash photography is not permitted.
