Children's Literature Seminar Series
Hosted by the Ethel K. Smith Library and the Thayer School of Education
Sponsored by the Friends of the Ethel K. Smith Library

The Children’s Literature Seminars exist as a monthly workshop opportunity for in-service Union County educators and librarians on the elementary and middle-grade levels and all interested pre-service Wingate University Thayer School of Education students. Five workshops will be offered throughout the course of the semester. The seminars are free to qualified participants.

Continuing Education Units

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance worth CEU credit with prior approval from their Local Education Agency.

Participants Will

  • Address specific themes in children’s and adolescent literature in both the lecture format and discussion groups
  • Create networking opportunities and actively share ideas and concepts
  • Connect with the University community and resources

Themes and Topics Include

  • Specific Author/Illustrators
  • Caldecott Winners
  • Newbery Winners
  • Fractured Fairy Tales
  • Diversity in Children’s Literature such as African American texts and Native American texts

Pedagogical Components Include

  • Inter-disciplinary and cross-curriculum studies
  • Reading across the curriculum and reading in the content area

Spring 2004 Schedule

All workshops meet for two hours from 9:00am-11:00am on the Mezzanine of the Ethel K. Smith Library on the Wingate University Campus.

  • February 28, 2004: African American Literature and the Presence of Myth, Legend, Fable, and Fairy Tales in Children’s Literature
  • March 13, 2004: Dr. Seuss – Using Dr. Seuss in the Classroom from Elementary to Secondary Levels (Note: due to the Union County snow make-up days, this event will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
  • April 24, 2004: Latin American Literature – A Study of Historical to Contemporary Works in Juvenile and Young Adult Literature
  • May 15, 2004: Caldecott Winners
  • May 22, 2004: Newbery Winners

Wingate University is located on Highway 74E, approximately 6 miles from Monroe. The University gates are on the left after the second stoplight. Workshops will be held in the Ethel K. Smith Library. Parking is available on Church and Elm Streets. The Library entrance faces the Academic Quadrangle.
