Q1. What sort of computer do I need?

A1. Access to NCLive resources not, strictly speaking, dependent on your computer but on the sort of browser you use. Any standard computer whether it runs Windows, Mac OS 9 or better, or Linux should work just fine.

Q2. O.K., then what sort of browser can I use?

A2. Minimum broswer recommendations include Internet Explorer 5.5, Netscape 7.0, Mozilla 1.5, Firefox 1.0 or Opera 6.0. I have no experience with Safari, so I can't say (very likely works just fine).

Q3. Do I have to configure my browser?

A3. Probably not. Just be sure that JavaScript is  enabled and that you allow your browser to accept all cookies.

Q4. How do I get an NCLive@Home password?

A4. You may go to the About NCLive@Home page to obtain a password. If you know your Wingate University campus network username and password, you may get the password directly by clicking on the "get the password" icon. You must log in as ACAD\[your_username] to get the password. If you do not know your network password, or it has expired, you can still fill out a form at the bottom of the page. You should get a reply within one business day. You may also go the the Library and ask the Reference Librarian on duty to supply the password. Please bring your student ID. Finally, the password is e-mailed to all faculty and students at the beginning of each semester. When you receive the e-mail, please save the information. Some day--probably around 3:00 a.m.--you will wish you had.

Q5. How do I know that the NCLive@Home password is correct?

A5. If the password is correct you should be connected to the database you want without any intervening steps. If not, you will receive the following message:

We are unable to validate your password. If you believe that this is in error, you can try again or contact your local library. Each NC LIVE  member institution has a password for remote users. These credentials are distributed by the librarians at each institution. Contact your local librarian to verify that the password you are using is valid.

Click "try again" for another chance to enter the correct password. If you continue to have problems, contact jimm@wingate.edu or call 704-233-8089 for assistance.

Q6. I managed to get past the NCLive@Home password page, but I am still getting a message box requesting a password. What do I do?

A6. This may be a problem with a cached file (also called temporary internet files). In Internet Explorer, the temporary internet files can be cleared by going to the Internet Options under the Tools menu. From there click the Delete Files button under the General tab (Note: make sure that "Delete all offline content" is checked). In Netscape, and Mozilla go to Preferences under the Edit menu and expand the Advanced branch from the left-handed plane. From there click on Cache and choose Clear. In Firefox, choose Options from the Tools menu and select the Cache tab under the Privacy button. From there click on the Clear button.

Q7. How often do I have to enter the password?

A7. The NCLive password with last until you close your web browser, disconnect from the Internet or shut down your computer.

Q8. How do I terminate my NCLive@Home connection when I am done?

A8. It is a good idea to close your web browser when you are done using your remote access session.

Q9. How will I know when to use a new password?

A9. Passwords generally expire near the beginning of January and August.  New passwords become activated near the end of December and July.  An e-mail will be sent with the new password just before the new password comes into effect. Should you forget the password, check About NCLive@Homepage to request the password. If you know your Wingate University campus network username, you can also receive the password by logging in as ACAD\[your_username].
