Bibliographic Instruction and Information Literacy

Bibliographic Instruction sessions must be scheduled at least one week in advance – please contact the Reference Department at campus extension 8097 and ask to speak to an instruction librarian for available dates/times or check the EKS Library Instruction Calendar.

Bibliographic Instruction orientation sessions incorporated into English 101 and English 102 were chosen as the most expedient platform for introducing a basic information literacy skill set that is transferable across disciplines. The goal of these sessions is to highlight, define, and explain how to implement various research mediums within the research process. The curricula for the two sessions are:

Module One:

  • Library of Congress classification system
  • Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)
  • Physical location of stacks and all materials in the library
  • Terms such as journal, periodical, peer-reviewed, etc.
  • Holdings and access for online and print materials, InterLibrary Loan (ILL), etc.
  • Resource evaluation techniques
  • Citation format and plagiarism commentary

Module Two:

  • Types of resources (primary, secondary, and tertiary)
  • Authenticity and evaluation
  • Sophisticated search strategies
  • Open-access resources
  • Reference tools (indices, subject encyclopedias, and concordances)
  • Citation format and plagiarism commentary

Bibliographic Instruction sessions beyond the orientation level for more advanced, assignment-specific, or discipline-specific information literacy skills are available as outlined in the Library’s Policy Manual.

Course Reserves

Course Reserve materials are processed by the Circulation Supervisor. Faculty may place items on Closed Reserve for specific classes each semester. Reserve items include materials from the EKS Library collection, personal copies of books, films, etc., and journal articles with specific conditions.

Reserves require a small amount of paperwork from the professor prior to processing. Materials are placed on Reserve by the faculty member completing a Reserve form for the type of item they wish to place on Reserve. Items in the EKS collection should be retrieved from the stacks and listed on the appropriate form by the faculty member. Please make the appropriate selection from the options below:

Reserve items may only be used inside the Library and the check out period may not exceed three hours. Patrons must have their Wingate University ID card for check out. E-Reserves may be accessed from the computers located in the Library or from computers connected to the campus network.

For more information about Course Reserves Guidelines including copyright, see the Library’s Policy Manual.

PBS Videos via NC LIVE

The NC LIVE Video Collection is a collection of more than 250 high quality documentary and educational video programs produced for the Public Broadcasting Corporation. The video collection is comprised of programming in the sciences, history, biography, the arts, and a variety of other subjects. This includes Ken Burns’ Baseball, The Civil War, and Jazz as well as the selected episodes from series such as American Experience, Frontline, Scientific American Frontiers, and the children’s programs Cyberchase and Liberty’s Kids.

Public performance rights are provided to NC LIVE member libraries, so long as the library, or any other exhibitor, does not charge an admission fee or “derive monetary gain.” Teachers and students are welcome to access the collection as registered users of North Carolina public libraries, universities, or community colleges, but NC LIVE has not licensed the content for use in K-12 schools.

You will need the NC LIVE password for the current academic year for off campus access to these videos. Please call the Reference Department at campus extension 8097 if you need assistance with this password.
