ILL is the short term used to refer to Inter-library Loan, a service which permits patrons of the Ethel K. Smith Library to have access to almost any magazine or journal article, newspaper article, or book which is owned by any academic or public library in the United States. The Ethel K. Smith Library is a member of a network of libraries which agree to loan these items to each other on a reciprocal basis.

Requesting Items

Forms for requesting ILL items are available at  Circulation Desk, the Reference Desk, and via an online form . The book form asks the patron for the title of the book, the author, the publisher, and the date of publication. The periodical form requests the name of the journal or magazine, the name of the specific article needed, the author of the article, the volume, issue, and date of the magazine or journal, and the ISSN, an 8-digit number which is usually found in the citation for the article. Both forms require the patron to fill in his name, telephone number, and mailing address so that the library staff can notify him or her when the item arrives.

Time Required

Generally we need two weeks to receive an item. After we send our request, the computer system may have to ask several libraries before it finds one where the item is available. Then the staff of the lending library has to either locate and photocopy an article or find and mail a book to us. The best way to insure that you will receive an item on time is to do your research promptly when you are given an assignment. and then to give us your request as soon as possible.

Access

Interlibrary Loan is available to Wingate University students, faculty or staff only. Friends of the Library are not eligible for this service, but can request items through the Union County Public Library.

Cost

There is no charge to borrow books. The charge for articles is 7.5¢ per page for faculty and staff and 10¢ per page for students. For articles not picked up within 30 days, an additional $5.00 processing fee will be charged. Overdue ILL Books (30 days past the due day for the book) will be charged $5.00.

Copyright Acknowledgment

Students must sign the back of each ILL request form to indicate that they agree not to use the ILL material for "any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." Professors and staff may sign a signature/permission form which is valid for one year. Faculty may make requests by telephone, e-mail, or fax.
