Actor Matthew Modine will be a guest speaker at Wingate University in the Recital Hall in the Batte Center this Thursday, November 12th, at 7:30 p.m. This free Lyceum event is arranged in part by the Union County Community Arts Council.

EKS Librarians Attend North Carolina Library Association Conference
EKS Librarians Marilyn Brown, Debbie Hargett, Amee Odom, and Greta Wood recently attended the 58th biennial conference of the North Carolina Library Association (October 6-9, 2009) in Greenville, North Carolina. This year’s conference theme was “North Carolina Libraries: Serving Knowledge…Serving You.” Over 500 academic, public, and school librarians were registered for the 3-day event. Keith Michael Fiels, Executive Director for the American Library Association (ALA), delivered the opening keynote address and the State Librarian of North Carolina, Mary Boone, provided the closing session address.

Need to talk with your colleagues about a group assignment but can’t get together in person? Chat about it online! The chat feature in Wingate’s myGateApps Email also supports group chat so you can invite multiple contacts to join the conversation.
Before you get started, adjust the Chat Settings in your myGateApps Email Settings to “Save Chat History” as shown in the image below. This way your chat conversations will be saved in the Chats system label in your myGateApps Email.
Now you’re ready to initiate a group chat. First, start a chat session with one person in your Contacts list, and then click the “Video & More” link at the bottom left of the chat window and select the “Group Chat” option:
Then enter the name of each contact you want to add in the “Add people to this chat” field:
That’s all there is to it! To leave the conversation, click the X in the upper right corner of the chat window. To rejoin the conversation, you will need to be invited back by someone still participating in the group (initiate a new chat with them and ask them to add you back to the group chat).

EKS Librarians Attend Georgia Conference on Information Literacy
Amee Odom and Greta Wood attended the Georgia Conference on Information Literacy (September 25-26) at the Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah. The conference focused on the concepts of librarian-faculty collaboration, information literacy in the library, in the classroom, and in writing, and a variety of pedagogical applications for information literacy learning outcomes.
The mission of the Georgia Conference on Information Literacy is to provide the opportunity to share research and best methods related to teaching, learning, and assessing essential lifelong learning skills:
- How to determine the extent of information needed in a given situation.
- How to access the needed information effectively and efficiently.
- How to evaluate information and its sources critically.
- How to incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base.
- How to use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
- Understanding the economic, legal, ethical, and social issues surrounding the use of information. (http://ceps.georgiasouthern.edu/conted/infolit.html)
The conference attendance was over 225 and presenters included librarians and faculty from Florida Gulf Coast University, Georgia Southern University, John Jay College of Criminal Justice (City University of New York), and more.

2009 Freshman and Transfer Student Orientation
During the Wingate University Freshman Orientation in August 2009, the EKS Library staff provided a Library orientation to 370 freshmen. The 2009 Freshman Orientation was comprised of a film viewing (written, performed, and filmed by Wingate University students, staff, and faculty) and a brief facility tour.
Transfer students were introduced to the Library’s resources during a bibliographic instruction session. A total of 35 students attended the 2009 Transfer Student Orientation.
Nonfiction Book Club at the Public Library
The Marshville Branch of the Union County Public Library is offering a new book club for the readers of eclectic nonfiction. Beginning October 8th with Generation Kill by Evan Wright, the group will meet the second Thursday of every month from 6pm-7pm at the Edwards Memorial Library at 414 Hasty Street in Marshville.
Future titles include Methland by Nick Reding (available as a Baker & Taylor selection in the EKS Library), Team of Rivals by Doris Goodwin, The World Without Us by Alan Weisman, and more. Pick up a brochure with full title list at the Ethel K. Smith Library Circulation Desk.

Microsoft Office 2003 PowerPoint Essentials Class at the Marshville Branch of the Union County Public Library
The Microsoft Office 2003 PowerPoint Class is a course designed to teach individuals how to create professional slide show presentations. This course will cover the basic skills used to design, edit and animate slides. At the end of the class, the class will have created a PowerPoint presentation.
The class will be held from 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm on Wednesday, September 23rd at the Marshville Branch of the Union County Public Library. It is offered free of charge, but please call 704-624-2828 to register and for directions. Prerequisite: Basic use of computer mouse and keyboard.

Nancy Williams to Retire
The EKS Library announces the retirement of Mrs. Nancy Williams. Her last working day will be December 21, 2007 but she will never leave our hearts. While we do wish her much joy and happiness, she will be sorely missed. Her position may get filled, but she will never be replaced.

New Home Page Design
The Library staff is excited about the new look of the Library’s home page. Jimm Wetherbee worked diligently to get the new page online. The familiar
categories are still there, but there is a new look and several enhancements. A link for PBS videos can be found by clicking on the “More…” under “Find.”
Another interesting feature is found by choosing “More…” under “Service.” This feature is the Library Space and Instruction Calendar, which allows users to view a calendar with all of the bookings for rooms and Bibliographic Instruction Classes. Patrons can find out if a room or class time is available when they need it or if they need to change a date or location. Bookings cannot be made on the new calendar, but it does give an overall view of what is available and when. These are just a couple of the items that are already available and we expect more to come. The hope is that the page is easier to navigate. Please try it out and give us your feedback.
