The Library staff is excited about the new look of the Library’s home page. Jimm Wetherbee worked diligently to get the new page online. The familiar
categories are still there, but there is a new look and several enhancements. A link for PBS videos can be found by clicking on the “More…” under “Find.”
Another interesting feature is found by choosing “More…” under “Service.” This feature is the Library Space and Instruction Calendar, which allows users to view a calendar with all of the bookings for rooms and Bibliographic Instruction Classes. Patrons can find out if a room or class time is available when they need it or if they need to change a date or location. Bookings cannot be made on the new calendar, but it does give an overall view of what is available and when. These are just a couple of the items that are already available and we expect more to come. The hope is that the page is easier to navigate. Please try it out and give us your feedback.

The staff was busy this year conducting a physical inventory of the Main Stacks and enhancing the facility in general. We are excited about the changes and hope that you will be as well.
Private Study Rooms
Four of the previous A/V Viewing rooms have been converted into private study rooms. Students will need their ID Cards to check out a key for one of these rooms and can keep the room for a period of three hours. These spaces will allow students to have a private area where they can study and concentrate. The rooms can ccommodate two patrons per room for paired study or exam preparations.
New Book Section Expanded
The New Books Section received some additional shelving. This expansion has afforded the relocation of the North Carolina Documents. This also has created a more prominent area for the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The new books are not just new library acquisitions, but new Baker and Taylor lease books as well. The New Books Section shelves are located adjacent to the Reference Desk for easy access and browsing.
Popular Reading Area
Baker and Taylor is the name of the lease company from which the Ethel K. Smith Library has a contract for new and popular books. These books are not a permanent part of the library’s collection and rotate out on a regular basis. While there may be some titles that will be applicable for academic use, most are leisure reading. The area also has a rotating kiosk of popular magazines as well as two couches.
All of the scholarly journals that the Ethel K. Smith Library has current
subscriptions for have been concentrated into an area near the Reference Desk. This new location will provide better access to these journals, highlight the collections, and encourage inquiries to back issues on hand in the Closed Stacks.
Wall of Presidents
Five portraits of several past presidents of Wingate College and a portrait of the original principal of Wingate School have been relocated from the Efird Memorial Library. These portraits are currently on display on the Mezzanine of the Ethel K. Smith Library’s second floor. A list accompanies the portraits providing their presidential dates, etc.
The former Quiet Study Room now houses the Wingate University Writing Center. With twenty computer stations and various tutors, this will be an excellent resource for students and faculty. The facility is located adjacent to the Academic Resource Center on the second floor of the Ethel K. Smith Library. The director, Mr. Kevin Winchester, is very excited and eager to assist students and faculty at any stage of the writing process.
Quiet Study Room
The Quiet Study Room is located on the second floor next to the Cornwell Room. This room has individual study carrels and can accommodate up to fifteen patrons at a time. As the name suggests, no talking is allowed in this space – ideal for the student who likes to concentrate on his or her work.

Greta Wood will be presenting at the North Carolina Library Association’s Library Instruction 2.0 Conference, November 17-18, 2008, at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her conference program proposal, “Evaluating Web Resources with High School Students: MedlinePlus vs. Wikipedia,” was recently accepted by the NCLA Program/Steering Committee. The topic grew out of this summer’s Technological Advances in Reproductive Biology Summer Science Program coordinated by Dr. Alison Dixon and hosted by Wingate University in conjunction with NC State University. Greta Wood is the Reference/Instruction/Catalog Librarian at the Ethel K. Smith Library and is the current Vice President/President Elect of the Metrolina Library Association.
As many of you know Susan Sganga has chosen a different career path and is no longer employed by Wingate University. Please note her new email address: firstname.lastname@example.org. While the EKS Library will miss her greatly, we wish her well in her endeavors at the Stone Table Cafe.
The Ethel K. Smith Library welcome Greta Wood who started Oct. 22 as the new Refrence/Bibliographic Instruction/Catalog Librarian. Ms. Wood received her MLIS at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, an MA in English at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a BA in English with minors in Anthropology and Women’s Studies at Colby College. During the Summer of 2007, the Reference Department computer equipment received a significant upgrade. A total of 19 stations have been installed (one of which is handicap accessible). The stations include flat screen monitors and terminals which converse with a main server in order to provide access to the Internet (NCLive, other online databases and the online catalog). The fact that the stations are not comprised of individual computers should increase the speed of the unit, in turn decreasing the patron’s wait time. This project also included two stations for the Main Stacks (floors 2 and 3) to facilitate online catalog searches. The Library Staff is pleased to be able to provide patrons with state-of-the-art search capabilities.

In his last official role as a director, Larry Coleman chose a very real to life comedy to direct. First Baptist of Ivy Gap was a hit from the first moment. No matter what denomination a member of the audience belonged to, there were characters presented on the stage that everyone could recognize in their own congregations. The hardest part for some would be admitting to being the character themselves.
For our librarians who were on stage, fitting into the roles was easier than for some people. This shows Mr. Coleman’s propensity for casting the right people in the right roles. Acting is always easiest when all you have to do is act natural. And natural they were.
In case you are still looking trying to figure out who is who, Mrs. Barbee is on the far left in the white hat and gloves. Our other two staff members are side by side at the center. Mrs. Hargett is the fifth from the left with the headband and flashy top. Mrs. Odom, our beloved library director, is next to her in the floral print dress.
This show was fun, not just to watch, but to participate in as well. There was much work, practice, and dedication that was put into this production, but it was an enjoyable experience for all.
While Mr. Coleman will still be on campus in his other staff duties, his directing abilities will be sorely missed. We can only hope his replacement is half as good.
Wingate University will present a 5-day FABS- Fine Arts of Being Southern. This will be a Symposium of Southern authors, artists, and musicians. All of the various festivities will begin on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 and conclude on Monday, April 2, 2007. All activities will be held on the campus of Wingate University. Join several members of the Library’s professional and student staff as they perform in First Baptist of Ivy Gap. Molly Coleman( Art Major), Luanne Barbee, Debbie Hargett, and Amee Odom have been cast in this Wingate University Theatre Production. “This play will be compared to Steel Magnolias, but forget steel; these mountain magnolias are pure gold; humor, drama, warmth and six of the most wonderful characters you’ll see – tasty com¬fort for the playgoer’s soul.” – Bristol Herald- Courier. Written by Ron Osborne, this beautiful Southern comedy is presented by the Wingate University Theatre. The play explores universal themes of loss and guilt, success and disappointment, and the benefits and evils of privilege. There will be several performances, and you do not want to miss our library staff in action.
