JSTOR Now Available

September 29th, 2012 by Debbie Hargett in Announcements, Databases, E-Resources

The Ethel K. Smith Library announces the JSTOR Arts & Sciences I Collection is now available from the All Databases page.

In 2010 JSTOR expanded its vast collection of archival content to include the most recent issues of academic journals. Through the aptly named Current Scholarship Program, publishers may distribute current scholarship and increase visibility; scholars may access the full runs–archival and current issues–of academic journals on an integrated, powerful, convenient, digital platform.

About the Current Scholarship Program, JSTOR writes “It was a direct response to the needs of the communities we serve, and supports our mission to advance fair and sustainable models that promote the widest possible disseminations of scholarly research and preserve publishing diversity.

JSTOR Arts & Sciences I Collection is a collection of primary sources which represents a range of disciplines published in the highest-quality academic journals including the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.  This collection is accessible in full-text to Wingate University users.  For help navigating the content, please contact the Reference Desk at (704) 233-8097.

Author Talk with Eugene Cross

September 25th, 2012 by Christy Inge in Announcements, Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Ethel K. Smith Library, Wingate the University Lyceum Committee, and the Wingate University Writing Center present a Lyceum on Tuesday, October 2nd 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in the Batte Center Recital Hall featuring Eugene Cross, author of Fires of Our Own Choosing. Eugene Cross captures much of his generation’s fears and excitements with a collection of realistic stories that borders on darkness at times. His is a voice combining humor and pathos with an edginess creating fresh new stories that are being published in great literary journals regularly.  A book signing will follow the presentation.

This Lyceum event is free with no reservation required.  For more information, please contact Christy Inge at (704) 233-8091.

A Universe From Nothing

September 20th, 2012 by jimm wetherbee in Reading EKScursions

A Universe From Nothing: Why There is Something Rather Than Nothing by Lawrence M. Krauss (Free Press 2012)

Lawrence Krauss has put together a fine introduction to the current state cosmology that is marred only by a provocatively metaphysical title to which exposition attempts to hew. Authors often lose control of their titles, and Krauss may have argued that subtitle should have read “How there is something rather than nothing,” or even better “How there is something in addition to nothing,” (which would surely be more consistent), but, really it is the metaphysics of “nothing” in the title that make it less than it could have been. But I get ahead of myself. Read the rest of this entry »
