Friends of the Library (FOL) Annual Gift
For its 2008-2009 annual gift, the FOL Board members selected two projects. For its first project, the Board members have chosen to make a monetary donation to the Office of Student Success. The purpose of this gift is to aid Wingate University students unable to purchase required textbooks for classes as a result of financial hardships. The Office of Student Success recently developed a program by which students desiring to be successful, but hindered by financial problems, could apply for and possibly receive funds to help in the purchase of textbooks. The FOL Board deemed this an excellent opportunity to benefit Wingate University students.
The second project selected by the Board members makes commentary on Wingate University’s commitment to its institutional memory. The Board chose to have a map preserved for archival presentation. This is no ordinary map, however. The specific map, a 1952 literary map of the United States of America, originally belonged to Mrs. Frances Cuthbertson Vick (1917-2002), Professor Emeritus, Wingate University. The map hung in Mrs. Vick’s classroom throughout her teaching career. Upon her retirement from Wingate in 1982, Mrs. Vick presented it to Dr. Beverly Christopher, who used the map until her recent retirement. Mr. Tom Alexander of Cherished Frameworks has carefully custom matted and framed the piece to insure its archival preservation. The map will soon be available for display near the Reference Desk on the First Floor.
