Book Signing with Kris Holloway Hosted by Friends of the Library
Wingate University’s common reading selection for the 2009-2010 academic year was Monique and the Mango Rains by Kris Holloway. The author served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali, West Africa from 1989-1991, where she met her husband, John Bidwell. She holds a MPH from the University of Michigan where she focused her research on maternal and child health. She has used her unique background in writing, public health, and development to further the mission of Parenthood, the National Priorities Project, the University of Michigan, Springfield College, and the Greenbelt Movement International. She currently works with the Center for International Studies, a fabulous study/live/explore abroad organization.
In late October, Holloway spent two days on the campus visiting classes, conducting a public lecture, and meeting with student and faculty groups. On the last day of her visit, the Friends of the Ethel K. Smith Library hosted a book signing in the Efird Memorial Library. The book signing was well attended by Wingate University students, faculty, and staff, as well as community members. Holloway was very personable with each guest, signed his/her book, and responded to questions about her work in the Peace Corps and her experiences with Monique. For many students, this was a first…getting a chance to meet the author and have their book signed. Holloway set an excellent standard for this event.
