Wilson Omnifile for Mobile Devices

November 7th, 2010 by jimm wetherbee in Announcements, Databases

Wilson Omnifile for the Ethel K. Smith LibraryA while back the library announced that EBSCOhost had a mobile component.  Now H. W. Wilson has announced that it too has opened its databases to mobile devices.  So, how does Wilson’s mobile offering compare to EBSCO’s?

The good news is, that although we’ve provided a link to Wilson’s mobile version of Omnifile on our Mobile Services page, no special link is needed.  Wilson automatically recognizes mobile devises and reformats pages accordingly. Unfortunately, while my native browser had no trouble with this, Opera Mini reported a script error.  Another plus is that while EBSCOhost mobile requires that one select databases ahead of time, Wilson’s Omnifile is a collection of databases and so all Wilson databases are preselected.

On the other hand, some of Wilson coolest features (such as text to voice, and text translation) are missing from the mobile version. Wilson still has some bugs to work out as well. After performing a search, I drilled down to the article I wanted but came up with an exception error when I clicked on the persistent link for the full text.  Perhaps iPhone and Android users will have better luck.  Also, unlike EBSCOhost mobile, there is no way to e-mail articles from the results list.  So, if I cannot get to the article or send a list to my desktop, this is strictly a matter of look-but-do-not-touch.

So, Wilson is not quite ready for prime time, but it will be soon enough and perhaps those of you with iPhones or Androids will have better luck.  At the time of this writing, Gale is working on a mobile app (as opposed to a mobile site) for Academic OneFile and Virtual Reference Library products.  To date, that is only available for the iPhone and iPad.  I look forward to seeing a more robust Wilson mobile site and an expanded suite from Gale.
