InterLibrary Loan: Lending Policy

This is where you can request books and articles not owned by the Ethel K. Smith Library.

About Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan or ILL is a resource-sharing service that permits patrons of the Ethel K. Smith Library to have access to almost any magazine or journal article, newspaper article, or book that is owned by any library in the United States. The Ethel K. Smith Library is a member of a network of libraries that agrees to loan these items to each other on a reciprocal basis. Attempts to borrow videos and other audiovisual items will be made, however, many libraries do not loan this category of materials.

General Polices & Procedures

  • Interlibrary Loan is available to Wingate University students, full-time faculty, and full-time staff only.  Adjunct faculty are eligible for non-returnable (article) requests.
  • FOL members may request items through their local public library branches.

  • Fee Structure:

    • There is no charge to borrow books.

    • Book borrowing fees and processing fees are not passed along to patrons. However, please be thoughtful and do not submit superfluous requests. An Association of Research Libraries (ARL) study reveals that many ILL book transactions can average $20.00 (this figure includes labor, materials, postage, etc.).

    • Articles are delivered to patrons electronically. In some instances, the lending institution may charge a lending fee. The EKS Library, on behalf of student patrons, will absorb the first $12, if applicable. Lending fees for faculty and staff, will be billed to the respective department via an Interdepartmental Transfer.

  • Borrowed materials must be returned on time:

    • Students, faculty, and staff will be assessed a non-refundable overdue charge of $10.00 for materials which are more than 5 days overdue. Fees will be processed by the Wingate University Business Office.

      • Please Note: As materials in question belong to libraries other than the EKS Library, fees/fines cannot be waived.

      • Renewal requests are not issued for overdue items.

    • Students, faculty, and staff with outstanding/late items will have all ILL privileges suspended until such time that the account has been reconciled.

    • Failure to return a lending/issuing library’s recall request to return item(s) immediately will also result in suspension of all ILL privileges.

  • Certain categories of materials are not loaned by Wingate University.

    • New books

    • Audiovisual materials

    • Reference items

  • Bulldog Delivery Service for Satellite Campuses

    • Students and faculty at satellite campuses may request books or microform documents owned by the EKS Library via the online Bulldog Delivery form. Books will be mailed to the patron's preferred mailing address. The patron is responsible for returning the item to the EKS Library. Microform materials will be emailed to the patron.
